Tutorial - How to update a firmware

You have downloaded the firmware and want to know how to install it in your samsung phone? Or still deciding if you are going to install the new firmware or not? In this post we'll explain how you can flash the new firmware in an easy way that works for all samsung devices.

  1. Download and install the necessary tools:

  2. Connect your phone to computer using USB port and make a full backup using KIES. Even if you are not interested in backing up your phone, installation of KIES is still necessary, since it contains the USB drivers for your device, what will also enable Odin to identify your phone;

  3. Download the firmware you want to install in your phone. if you don't know the exact model version of your device, we suggest the use of Phone Info app, available on google play store;

  4. Using 7-zip, uncompress the downloaded firmware. The file format that Odin uses is tar.md5;

  5. Open the folder where Odin was installed and right click on Odin3v3.10.7.exe, choosing the option "run as administrator";

  6. Turn off your phone and unplug it from USB cable or port;

  7. Turn on your device on download mode, by pressing both power, home and volume down at the same time for some seconds, until your phone vibrates and turns on. Wait until a warning screen appears and press "volume up" button. You will now be on download mode;

  8. Connect your phone to USB port again. If everything works as expected, Odin must show the "Added!" message and a blue square on Odin's left side with the COM port number where your phone is connected to.  If these messages don't show up, reconnect the USB cable from the phone or PC, or even try to reopen Odin. Just advance to next step if these messages appear;

  9. Certify that the "re-partition" option in odin is not checked. In case you forget it checked, your phone will be wiped and you'll lost all the data on internal storage. Only the SD card data will not be lost, so be careful with this;

  10. Click on "AP" button on Odin and choose the firmware that you downloaded and already decompressed on step 4;

  11. Wait until Odin finishes making the firmware file check;

  12. When the check is done, click on "Start" button;

  13. Now you just have to wait for the progress bar to reach 100%. The update will be complete when the message "PASS" appears in a green square, above the blue square from COM port. Just unplug your device form USB cable/port after the "PASS" message;

  14. Wait for the phone update, which may take about 10 minutes in some devices. First, it'll stay for a bit on samsung animation screen and after will show a numbered progress of apps update. Then, you're ready to use your phone again;
